Influitive Rolling Points Expiration (365 Days): Configuration, Limitations, and Recommended Rollout

Overview

Influitive supports rolling points expiration by setting an expiration period in days (for example, 365 days for “12 months”). However, there is no supported configuration to enable rolling expiration only for newly earned points while exempting previously earned historical points—existing points will also be evaluated by the expiration rule based on the feature’s coded behavior.

To avoid members experiencing an unexpected immediate reduction in point balances, use a communications-based rollout with a clearly announced future effective date before turning the setting on.

Key Information

  • True rolling expiration is supported by configuring Points Expiration in days (e.g., 365 days for a 12-month rolling policy).
  • Key limitation: There is no “start date” and no “grandfather existing points” option. You cannot make expiration apply only to points earned after you enable the setting without also impacting existing historical points.
  • Expected behavior when enabled: Points are evaluated based on their age (days since earned). When the setting is enabled for the first time, older points may expire immediately if they are already older than the configured threshold.
  • Recommended mitigation: Announce the change in advance and enable the setting on a communicated future go-live date so members have time to redeem points.
  • Product status: No defect fix/version was identified; this is a current product limitation/behavior. An internal engineering work item was logged as <engineering_issue_id> to track the request for alternative behavior.
  • Where to configure it: Settings/Admin → Scoring & Achievements → Points Expiration
    • Set Points Expiration to 365 days for a “12 months after earn date” rolling policy.
  • Recommended rollout approach (to avoid surprises):
    • Choose a future effective date (for example, <future_date>).
    • Communicate the policy ahead of time (example: “Starting on <future_date>, points older than 1 year will expire. Please redeem points before then.”).
    • On the effective date, enable Points Expiration and set it to 365 days.
  • Validation after enabling:
    • Spot-check multiple member accounts (including long-standing members) to confirm older points are handled consistently with the configured expiration period.
    • Confirm that new points earned after go-live follow the 365-day rolling aging policy.
  • If you need “apply expiration only to points earned after <start_date>”: this is not available via configuration and would require a product enhancement rather than an admin setting.

Customer Impact

Action required: If you want a 12-month rolling expiration policy, set Points Expiration to 365 days in Settings/Admin → Scoring & Achievements → Points Expiration. Plan and execute member communications before enabling the setting.

Expected outcome: Once enabled, points are subject to expiration based on their age. Because historical points are also evaluated, enabling the setting without advance notice can cause immediate expiration of older points; using a future effective date helps prevent unexpected balance reductions.

Frequently Asked Questions

1. Can Influitive do a true rolling expiration like “expire 12 months after earn date”?
Yes. Configure Points Expiration to 365 days in Admin/Settings → Scoring & Achievements → Points Expiration.
2. Can I make rolling expiration apply only to points earned after I turn it on (so older points are exempt)?
No. There is no “start date” or “grandfather existing points” option for points expiration; it cannot be configured to begin rolling only from “now” without affecting existing points according to the feature’s coded behavior.
3. What’s the best way to avoid members losing older points unexpectedly when I enable expiration?
Announce the policy change in advance, specify a future effective date (for example, “points older than 1 year will expire beginning <future_date>”), give members time to redeem points, and enable the 365-day expiration on that effective date.
4. Is there an automated/scheduled process required to remove expired points once Points Expiration is enabled?
No additional manual tracking process is required beyond enabling the Points Expiration setting; the recommended effort is operational (member communications and choosing a go-live date).
